Satellite is no longer plan B, says Wapa at 20th anniversary conference
The conference, attended by 140 delegates and supported by 24 sponsors, highlighted the growing role of low Earth orbit (Leo) satellite technology as part of South Africa’s evolving broadband landscape. Industry leaders said satellite should no longer be seen as a backup solution, but as a strategic tool that complements fibre, fixed wireless and 5G networks. With global providers such as Starlink and Project Kuiper expanding rapidly, speakers noted that Wisps and ISPs are well positioned to support hybrid connectivity models through local installation and support services. Despite ongoing challenges such as spectrum constraints and regulatory delays, the conference concluded that satellite connectivity is becoming central to resilient, converged digital infrastructure, with AI expected to help manage increasingly complex networks.

OneWeb LEO Transforms Connectivity at Shipwreck Lodge
Located on the remote Skeleton Coast, Journeys Namibia Shipwreck Lodge is an eco-luxury destination that previously struggled with poor operational and guest connectivity due to its extreme isolation and harsh weather. To overcome these infrastructure challenges, Echo Namibia installed a modern Twoobii–OneWeb LEO satellite solution powered by Eutelsat. This low-latency upgrade replaced an unreliable legacy system, delivering high-speed bandwidth, seamless VoIP and WhatsApp communication, and efficient data transfers to the Head Office. As a result, this high-end lodge successfully maintains world-class connectivity standards without harming its fragile desert ecosystem.
