OneWeb LEO Transforms Connectivity at Shipwreck Lodge

OneWeb LEO Transforms Connectivity at Shipwreck Lodge

Introduction

Located on the remote Skeleton Coast, Journeys Namibia Shipwreck Lodge is an eco-luxury destination inspired by the region’s historic shipwrecks and dramatic desert surroundings. Designed to resemble stranded vessels along the coastline, the lodge offers guests a unique experience within one of Africa’s most isolated landscapes. Sustainability is central to the lodge’s operations, with solar energy and responsible resource management helping to minimise environmental impact in this fragile ecosystem. Despite its remote location, the lodge provides exceptional comfort while giving visitors rare access to the striking scenery and wildlife of the Namibian Skeleton Coast.

The Challenge

Shipwreck Lodge faced significant connectivity challenges due to its extreme remote location on the Namibian Skeleton Coast, where no terrestrial communication infrastructure exists. The lodge previously operated on a legacy connectivity solution that suffered from high latency, inconsistent performance, and limited reliability in the harsh coastal environment. Frequent fog, overcast conditions, and severe weather further degraded service quality, affecting guest experience and operational efficiency, and highlighting the need for faster, more reliable connectivity in this remote coastal location.

The Solution

Shipwreck Lodge required a modern connectivity solution, and Echo Namibia recommended the low latency, robust Twoobii–OneWeb LEO satellite solution powered by Eutelsat. This upgrade significantly enhanced speed, reliability, and bandwidth capacity, enabling seamless communication, VoIP and WhatsApp services, as well as efficient operational data transfer between Head Office and the lodge. Overall, the solution ensures the lodge operates with the connectivity standards of a world-class destination.

“To be honest, since the implementation by Echo Namibia of the Twoobii-OneWeb LEO solution, I haven’t had a single issue that required my involvement to resolve any connectivity issues” Andries Gelderblom. IT Manager
